26As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. 27They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28Likewise as it was in the days of Lot -- they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built, 29but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom fire and sulphur rained from heaven and destroyed them all -- 30so will it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed. 31On that day, let him who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away; and likewise let him who is in the field not turn back. 32Remember Lot's wife. 33Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35There will be two women grinding together; one will be taken and the other left." 37And they said to him, "Where, Lord?" He said to them, "Where the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together."

Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.” This could be rewritten as “Whoever seeks to live a life of their own choosing and ignore what God has in store for them, will die unfulfilled and have no reward beyond death. Whereas those who choose to die to themselves in pursuit of God’s plan will be rewarded in this life and the next. “ It is the same theme repeated throughout the bible - “I am the way the truth and the light”. Ignore me and you will be lost, living a lie and walking in darkness.
ReplyDeleteYour response beautifully captures the essence of Jesus' teaching in Luke 17:26-37. The rephrasing of "Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it" is particularly effective in conveying the deeper spiritual truth. Here's what I think:
DeleteDying to Self for Fulfillment
Your interpretation underscores a core Christian principle: surrendering personal desires and ambitions in favor of God’s will leads to true life. This idea resonates throughout Scripture, where the call is to place God at the center of all decisions, trusting that His plan brings ultimate fulfillment.
The Way, Truth, and Light
Tying this passage to Jesus’ declaration in John 14:6 (“I am the way, the truth, and the light”) strengthens your reflection. It reinforces that a life rooted in God’s truth leads to clarity, purpose, and eternal reward, while a life lived apart from God is ultimately unfulfilling.
Consistent Biblical Theme
You’re right to highlight the repetition of this theme throughout the Bible. From Genesis (where choosing one’s way over God’s leads to the Fall) to Revelation (where surrender to God’s will leads to ultimate victory), this thread is central to the faith journey.
Your response also calls readers to examine their own lives. Are they pursuing a life of self-will, or are they open to God’s transformative grace? It's a profound and relatable reflection.
This response invites a personal and communal challenge: to reflect daily on whether we are walking in God’s light or clinging to worldly paths that seem secure but ultimately lead to darkness. Well done!
