34As he went ashore he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. 35And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the hour is now late; 36send them away, to go into the country and villages round about and buy themselves something to eat." 37But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." And they said to him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?" 38And he said to them, "How many loaves have you? Go and see." And when they had found out, they said, "Five, and two fish." 39Then he commanded them all to sit down by companies upon the green grass. 40So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. 41And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. 42And they all ate and were satisfied. 43And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

Mark 6:34-44
ReplyDeleteIn this passage, Jesus demonstrates his care and compassion for the people by feeding them. In so doing he reveals a truth about his divinity. He is not contained by the laws of nature, He has the power to overcome these laws. In this instance, he converts 10 loaves and 5 fish into enough to feed 5000 men and the women and children who accompanied them. I think this story holds a promise for all of us. If we discover and faithfully live God’s call, we are empowered to achieve things that defy the normal laws of nature. Once we join in Christ’s mission and become part of his transformation agenda, we are granted superpowers. I believe this but struggle to give myself totally to God. Loving God, show me how I can live your call without foregoing all I have worked hard to achieve. Give me the prudence, temperance and charity to use my gifts to do your work. Amen.
Your reflection on Mark 6:34-44 is heartfelt and insightful, weaving together Jesus' compassion, divine power, and the personal challenge of living faithfully within God’s call. Here are some thoughts:
DeleteStrengths:
Recognition of Jesus’ Compassion and Power:
You emphasize Jesus’ care for the people, not just spiritually but also physically, which aligns with the Gospel’s holistic portrayal of His mission. You also rightly highlight how the miracle of feeding the 5000 reveals His divinity and authority over nature—a central theme in this passage.
Connection to Personal Empowerment:
Your interpretation that joining Christ’s mission empowers us to transcend ordinary limits is inspiring. It reflects a deep understanding of how faith transforms individuals, enabling them to participate in God’s work in extraordinary ways.
Honest Struggle with Total Surrender:
Your acknowledgment of the tension between your desire to follow God’s call and your attachment to what you’ve worked hard to achieve is refreshingly authentic. Many believers share this struggle, making your prayer relatable and sincere.
Focus on Virtues:
By asking for prudence, temperance, and charity, you display a clear understanding that aligning your life with God’s will requires virtue. This reflects spiritual maturity and a desire to balance your earthly responsibilities with heavenly priorities.
Suggestions for Enhancement:
Reframe "Superpowers" as Grace:
While the term "superpowers" is vivid, you might consider emphasizing that these abilities come from grace—God working through us, rather than powers we own. This could deepen your reflection on the mystery of God’s work in human lives.
Explore the Multiplication as a Call to Generosity:
The miracle of loaves and fish can be seen as an invitation to generosity. Jesus takes what little the disciples offer and multiplies it abundantly. Reflecting on how your own "loaves and fish" (gifts, talents, resources) could be entrusted to God for the benefit of others might add another dimension to your response.
Integrate the Community Aspect:
Jesus performs the miracle in the context of a gathered crowd and involves the disciples in distributing the food. This shows that God’s work often unfolds in community. How does this inspire your own engagement with others in living out God’s call?
Reflect on Trust in God's Provision:
The story reassures us that God provides abundantly when we place our trust in Him. How might this deepen your faith, especially when faced with the fear of losing what you’ve worked for? Trust in God’s provision might help reconcile your struggle with total surrender.
Closing Thought:
Your prayer captures the essence of the spiritual journey—seeking to align your gifts and accomplishments with God’s will without losing the sense of gratitude for them. Your honesty about the struggle to surrender fully reflects a desire to grow in faith. Remember, surrender doesn’t necessarily mean giving everything away but reorienting it toward God’s purposes. Your gifts and achievements, like the loaves and fish, can be multiplied when placed in God’s hands.
