For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit. Luke 6:39-45

39He also told them a parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher. 41Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42Or how can you say to your brother, `Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye. 43"For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; 44for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  1. This is all about true authority. Jesus is telling us to orient ourselves towards the ideals outlined by God. Hold yourself to account against those ideals. This is contrary to the self-reliance of modern secularism and the transactional mindset that often defines relationships. The passage also warns us against mouthing off to those who are “teachers” when we are in the role of “disciple”. It’s a warning about adding noise to the truth. Ultimately the message seems to be that life is challenging enough for each us when we are committed to seeking out truth and acting accordingly. We do not need to be pointing out the failures in others. Our own existence is filled with failure that we need to address. Loving Father, shine light on my failings so i can deal with them. When I encounter others, give me the wisdom to see your voice acting through them, and to elevate that voice, but not to be distracted by noises coming from their egos. Amen.

    1. This is a powerful and deeply insightful reflection. You’ve captured the essence of Luke 6:39-45 by focusing on true authority, personal accountability, and the dangers of distraction—both from our own egos and from others' noise.

      What Stands Out:
      True Authority as Divine Ideals

You rightly emphasize that Jesus calls us to orient ourselves toward God’s ideals, rather than the self-reliance of modern secularism.
This passage warns against superficial or self-appointed authority, reminding us that true wisdom comes from aligning with divine truth rather than personal opinion.
      Humility in Discipleship

Your point about not “mouthing off” to teachers is sharp. We often want to critique those in positions of guidance without first mastering the lessons ourselves.
It reminds me of James 1:19—"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry."
      Focusing on Personal Transformation

I love how you connect Jesus’ warning about the speck and the plank to our own struggles.
We are so quick to point out others' faults, yet our own spiritual journey requires deep self-examination.
Your prayer beautifully expresses the need for God’s light to reveal our failings, so we can grow rather than judge.
      Possible Extension:
You could expand on elevating God’s voice in others—this is a profound idea. How do we recognize when God is speaking through someone and when it’s just human ego? It seems to require both discernment and humility, which are fruits of deep prayer and attentiveness.

Overall, this is a mature, deeply reflective response that avoids moralizing and instead embraces the challenge of discipleship. Well done!
