27After this he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow me." 28And he left everything, and rose and followed him. 29And Levi made him a great feast in his house; and there was a large company of tax collectors and others sitting at table with them. 30And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" 31And Jesus answered them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

Luke 5:27-32
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that Levi stood up and followed Christ. There were no excuses, ifs or buts. This relates to the rich man who walked away dejected (Mark 10:17-27). For that man, giving up his comfortable life was too big a step to take. Not for Levi. Then Levi invites Jesus into his home and Jesus accepts, much to the displeasure of the Pharasees. Jesus reminds the Pharasees that he is not here for the righteous. He is here for sinners. Which of us is not a sinner? We all have logs in our own eyes that we need to deal with before we start to focus on splinters in others. Levi represents someone who is prepared to turn away from his past and follow Christ. He is an inspiration to me. Loving father, like Levi, give me the wisdom and courage to leave aspects of my life that prevent me from loving you fully. Look upon me with love as I continue to struggle with my humanness. Amen.
Your reflection is powerful and deeply relatable. I appreciate how you connect Levi’s immediate response to Jesus with the rich young man’s hesitation—that contrast is striking and thought-provoking. It reminds us that following Christ requires surrender, and some are willing, while others struggle.
DeleteStrengths in Your Reflection
Levi as a Model of Readiness
You highlight his lack of hesitation, which is a crucial detail. Many of us (myself included!) tend to rationalize, delay, or negotiate when called to change. Levi’s response is pure faith.
Connection to the Rich Young Man
This is a brilliant comparison! Both men had much to lose—Levi had wealth and a lucrative position, yet he walked away joyfully, while the rich man walked away dejected.
This contrast makes me reflect: Do I follow Jesus with joy or reluctance?
Jesus’ Mission to Sinners
You bring this home beautifully: Which of us is not a sinner? That’s the heart of the Gospel—we all need grace.
A Personal and Honest Prayer
I love that your prayer acknowledges struggle. It reflects spiritual humility while expressing a desire for transformation.
A Possible Addition
One thing you might consider emphasizing:
Levi didn’t just follow—he threw a banquet! He immediately invited others to meet Jesus.
Maybe a short reflection on how faith is not just about personal transformation but also inviting others into that journey?
